COVID-19 Response Effort

Our Chapter's Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Blessings in a Backpack is striving to ensure kids have weekend food to eat during the COVID-19 health emergency, whether they are learning in the classroom or remotely.

Since 2014, the Frederick Chapter has grown from serving 210 kids to ensuring more than 3,000 local children hunger-free weekends, school breaks, and weather-related closings during the past school year. The years 2020 and 2021 have been extraordinary as we shifted from our traditionally school-based program to a community distribution model in order to feed kids when schools were closed due to the pandemic . . . and, for the first time, we had summer distribution.

Thanks to the dedication and support of our generous donors and funders, volunteer network, local suppliers, school partners, Frederick City government, and Frederick County government, our chapter has established a solid foundation for sustainability and growth. Now, we’re ready to begin feeding thousands more local children who may be at risk of going hungry.

Our chapter has received an outpouring of support during this pandemic. We are so blessed to have such a caring and motivated group of volunteers and donors in Frederick. Because of people like them (and you!), we are providing for our kids during this public health emergency. Thank you!

At Blessings in a Backpack, we mobilize communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekend to kids who might otherwise go hungry. Because of this mission, we have witnessed the power of communities when they come together toward a common goal. It is because of this experience that we are confident our county will find the strength to weather this storm together.
